Starting the Year with Intention: Why Planning Matters
The start of a new year is often framed as a time to rush forward to set big goals, move fast, and do more. At ARAA, we see this moment a little differently. For us, planning is not about speed. It’s about intention.
Setting clear goals gives us something to work towards, but just as importantly, it helps us understand why we’re doing the work and who it’s for. Thoughtful planning creates space for reflection, accountability, and care especially when working across communities, cultures, and vast distances.
This year, as ARAA undertakes its annual planning process, we’re reminded that strong outcomes come from taking the time to map the path ahead together. Planning allows us to align our values with our actions, to be realistic about capacity, and to ensure that our work continues to support artists and communities in meaningful and sustainable ways.
If you’re setting goals for the year whether as an artist, arts worker, or organisation here are a few simple steps to help get started:
1. Start with purpose
Before writing goals, ask yourself what matters most this year. Is it growth, stability, learning, rest, or connection? Let your purpose guide your priorities.
2. Keep goals clear and achievable
A small number of well-defined goals is more effective than a long list. Focus on what is realistic within your time, energy, and resources.
3. Break goals into steps
Large goals can feel overwhelming. Breaking them down into smaller actions makes progress visible and achievable.
4. Build in flexibility
Plans should guide you, not restrict you. Leave room for change, community needs, and unexpected opportunities.
5. Check in regularly
Revisit your goals throughout the year. Reflect on what’s working, what’s not, and what might need to shift.
Planning is an act of care for yourself, your practice, and your community. As the year unfolds, taking the time to set intentions and revisit them can help keep you grounded, focused, and connected to what truly matters.
